Eclectica- Report for the session 2016-17

Eclectica- The English Literary Society of the college planned a plethora of fun filled activities and events for the session 2016-17. The annual self composed poetry recitation competition was held on September 25, 2016. The purpose of this event was to bring out the latent talent of the students, which hides somewhere in the corners of the four walled classrooms. The event was followed by a movie screening on John Osborne’s Look Back in Anger.

Childhood is the most beautiful season of life. The participants revisited sweet and sour memories of their childhood with their poems based on the theme Childhood Revisited. The judges for the event were Mr. Mukesh Bhairwa, Ms. Jyoti Kathpalia and Ms. Aleya Giri. There were 20 participants in all with four prizes on the grab- 3 for conventional poetry and 1 for the newly introduced slam session. The first prize was bagged by Namya Kaushic, second by Amrit Versha and the third by Jaideep Singh. Devansh Chaudhary won the prize for the slam poetry. From wanting to role-play ‘Batman’ to finding best friends in the trees, to reliving cherished memories where the hardest decision was to choose the ice cream flavor, to upsetting over uncontrollable appetite, everybody’s childhood had it all.

The society geared up and expanded its horizons with the launch of Constellation’17, its first ever annual department festival- an amalgamation of academia and some exciting events. It provided a platform for students from colleges across the city to hone their talents and engage in a plethora of intellectually stimulating delightful activities. This edition was held on 20th-21st February, 2017. The theme for the same was Journeys: Metaphorical and Actual.

The two day festival began with the Student Paper Presentation Competition scheduled on Day 1. Through this competition, the society endeavored to delve deeper into the phenomenon of daily interests, which seem rather subtle on the outside but have myriad layers to its being. The judges for this event were Dr. R.N Bhardwaj (our retired senior faculty), Ms. Renu Kapoor and Mr. Dharamraj. The first prize was bagged by Aditya Pant, second by SVD Chandrashekhar and third by S. Bhavsudha. The audience unraveled newer identities by evaluating journeys of characters from popular works of literature such as Funny Boys, God of Small Things, One Hundred Years of Solitude, The Catcher in the Rye, amongst many others. The participants also discussed refugees and their identity crisis. A few of them linked spiritual journey with science fiction and assessed humanity through changes across the centuries from Marxist perspectives.  This event attracted participants from 10 colleges in the city.
Day 2 commenced with Kaliedoscript- an unconventional creative writing competition that involves a video played in loop. It was judged by Ms. Megha Sharma and Ms. Pritika Nehra. The participants had to base their pieces of writing from an instance in the video. The first prize went to Kritika Singh, second to Shilpa Dwivedi and the third to Karishma Sahoo. The event was followed by an In-Costume Monologue competition, wherein students not only had to dress up like their favorite characters from any works of literature but also enact a monologue. Ms Jyoti Kathpalia and Ms. Vandana Agarwal were the judges for the event. Ayush Awasthi and Sheh Yadav won the prizes in order respectively. On both days of the event, the society organized Bring Your Own Book- the great book barter fair which was a huge success. A book for a book educates the youth! Over 500 books were exchanged. Eclectica hopes the festival becomes a yearly tradition.

SATARK

The Consumer Club, PGDAV College

Satark, the Consumer Club of PGDAV College was launched in 2011. The idea behind setting up the club, a sort of unique initiative in itself, was to raise awareness in the society and provide redressal of consumer grievances. Satark is a constituent of Consumers’ Forum, registered in 1980, under Government of India Societies Registration Act, 1860. The Forum is a member of CONSUMERS INTERNATIONAL (LONDON) and Consumer Coordination Council, New Delhi. It is solely devoted to the cause of consumer protection relating to adulteration, high prices, incorrect weights and measures, medical negligence and other services that flout minimum parameters.

E-WASTE AWARENESS AND COLLECTION DRIVE

SATARK has been spreading awareness about “E-WASTE” since 2013.  The club had collaboration with GIZ and now with e-Parisara, who are authorized e-waste recyclers. The club conducts e-waste awareness programs and then the collection drive. After understanding the harmful effects e-waste, the students and faculty of PGDAV have pledged to reduce-reuse-recycle the electronic gadgets and devices. Last year the members worked hard and collected 100kg e-waste which was disposed with, E-Parisara, an authorised e-waste recycler.

FIELD VISITS

The club undertakes consumer awareness programs in different schools. Faculty and students of SATARK visited St. Brij Mohan Sr. Secondary School situated in Anangpur Village. The school students were addressed on two important topics- food safety and consumer rights. The club organized awareness programs in Dev Samaj Senior Secondary School on 19.4.2012; in Saraswati Bal Mandir on 2.5.2012 and Guru Nanak Senior Secondary School, Faridabad, on 3.5.2012. The students also visited Village Chalera, at Sec 44, Noida, UP on Sun 9th Sept 2012.

TALKS

Every year the club conducts talks on consumer related issues. The current session started with a talk on “GST and its impact on consumers”.In January 2015, Satark in collaboration with Inner Wheel Club organised a talk on “Women Property Rights”.  The audience was benefited with this relevant topic and learned rights of women across religions as well as does and don’ts while making a will. On 26th Oct 2012, the club in collaboration with Consumer Voice (a voluntary organization in Interest of Consumer Education) organized a Workshop on Stock Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and Investor Awareness to educate students of the college about financial awareness and irregularities.

KSS

SATARK has made a beginning from 2016 to hold Knowledge Sharing Sessions (KSS) to provide the members a platform to share and enhance their knowledge by discussing on consumer related issues.  The club believes in not just creating awareness, but also practising the same.

INTERNSHIPS

The students of the club undertake internships with Consumers India and work on real life issues related to the consumers. Last year Navnit Kumar (President, Satark), interned with Consumers India under the mentorship of Dr Roopa Vajpayee, from 10th Dec 2016 -16th Jan 2017. He worked on the topic Rivers and Consumers, where he accessed the pollution of water bodies, critically analysed the programmes and policies and regulatory framework for water resources in India.

KITCHEN GARDENING

The increased prevalence of pollutants in the air and pesticides in food lowers the immunity of people who are genetically prone to allergies. We all are effected by the chemicals in food we eat. One probable solution to escape the chemicals is kitchen gardening. The students were sensitized about the ill-effects of chemicals in food and benefits of kitchen gardening. As a result all the students started gardening at their houses. Some have made a kitchen garden and some who didn’t have space are growing in pots.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

The club conducts various inter-college and intra-college competitions like poster making, poster presentation, ad making, essay writing, debate, etc. on various consumer related issues. The club conducts events on the theme of World’s Consumer Day. In 2017, several competitions were organised on the theme- Consumer Rights in the Digital Age and the club was featured on Consumer’s International website.

The club propagated a cracker-free Diwali to reduce the pollution and to create a healthy environment to live in. The club has a dynamic fb page which creates awareness, shares global news related to consumers and shares the activities conducted by the club.

PLACEMENT REPORT 2015-16

The placement cell aims at providing jobs to every student who intends to work after graduating. In the current session 2015-16  with the efforts of the placement team we have strived hard to achieve our goals. With an overwhelming response from the industry we have been able to place 340 students.

Apart from inviting companies to the college, we also held workshops and seminars to prepare our students for the recruitment drive. A lecture on 'Do's and Don'ts  of GD and Frequently  asked questions in PI' by prof KK Srivastav was well attended.

Mr Krishnan from Ernst Young guided students in preparing their resume. The placement cell also invited alumini of the college to interact with the students and conducted mock GDs to remove fear and phobia of the candidates.

For enhancing entrepreneurship and self-employment skills among students the placement cell in collaboration with career counselling club organised a seminar on 'Entrepreneurship as career option'. Senior consultant Dr H P Singh at NIESBUD was invited. He made students aware of various business options, government policies and loans available for the startups.

We have progressed not only in terms of number of placements but also the quality. With top corporate houses such as Ernst Young, RBS, British Telecom, Aon Hewitt, L & T, Genpact, ICICI Prudencial, IBM concentrix, AdviceAda, Limetray, Oberoi group visited our campus and offered decent pay packages. The success of our placement cell warrants a due credit to the students team that worked meticulously throughout the year. The placement cell of the college is in a continuous process of developing alliance with more and better potential recruiters. We wish and hope to achieve even greater success in future.

PLACEMENT REPORT 2016-17

The Placement Cell of our college is characterised by an unparalleled zeal to help the students secure jobs after graduation. More than being an organising body, the placement cell here strives to recognise the individual abilities and weaknesses of students. It enables us to appreciate and cultivate the qualities our students possess and to inculcate the ones they lack. With the combined knowledge, experience and enthusiasm of the faculty and student members from various departments, the placement team is well equipped to put their resources together for the benefit of the students.

We can boast of successfully maintaining strong ties with the suitable companies, achieved by us because of our skilled students and a positive work culture, which makes them come back year after year. According to our record this year, around 200 students have been placed in high standing corporate institutions such as: Ernst and Young, Concentrix, Genpact, Comviva, Aon Hewitt,British Telecom, Royal Bank of Scotland amongst others. We are still awaiting quite a few recruiters, which will, without doubt raise the number.

Workshops and Seminars on diverse and related topics are conducted throughout the year and students not only from third year but first and second year are also invited to participate in them. More than placement, our overall goal is to work on building in our students the confidence to face the world beyond college. For this, we take and analyse feedback from both the students and the recruiting companies before planning our workshops and lectures. This year, the activities of the placement cell began with an orientation program, conducted by Mrs. Renu Kapoor from the Department of English of our college which enlightened the students on the importance of Body Language while facing interviews and Group Discussions. This was followed by a ‘soft-skills’ session conducted by speakers from Ernst and Young which dealt with the importance of a powerful resume and the nuances of writing the same.

In order to hone the basic confidence and communication skills of our students, we initiated a fifteen day workshop on English language, with lectures by many faculty members and selected student volunteers. In order to answer the doubts of students regarding career options and future educational opportunities, we invited NIIT to hold interactive sessions on the upcoming and popular field of App development. The speakers encouraged students to explore diverse courses and job opportunities after graduation. Continuing with the list of workshops, one of our members, Dr. Pradeep held a talk to answer the various queries and doubts in Accounts.

We would like to briefly mention of seminars organised by the placement cell in collaboration with various organisations, primarily: a programme on ‘Turning Your Passion into Career’ by Human Circle, in which, the speakers Mr. Kamal Seth and Mrs. WoiletaBurdzy Seth encouraged students to find their passion and follow it and provided tips on tackling the obstacles they might find on their way. Another seminar was organised under the initiative of our respected Principal, Dr. M.M Goyal on Australian Education System, also aimed at enabling the students to explore global educational and occupational opportunities. In addition to placements in multinational corporations, we encourage our students to give back to the society by becoming associated with NGOs such as the Gandhi Fellowship with its aim to create Social entrepreneurs and offer teaching internships in various schools across country. Our students have been selected for internships for a number of esteemed organisations such as: Teach India, WaggyTaggy, City Furnish, The Indian Economist to name a few.

The Placement Cell of PGDAV College organised its very first Internship Fair on 20th April’17. Sixteen companies and/or start-ups participated in the event, namely,

Arbunize, Innobate, Turning Stones, Travel Traingle, etc. offering internships in various fields. The profiles included editorial, content writing, business development, data analyst, business analyst, marketing, sales, management, graphic designing, photography, android developer, blogger, public relations, HR, etc., for students from all courses.

Around 250 students from different colleges had registered for the fair. 70 students were shortlisted and eventually 42 students were hired by these companies. The fair offered a platform to the students to explore and broaden their horizons through these internships. The event proved to be successful.

The placement cell hopes to continue the efforts and rise to new heights, a feat made possible with the rewards of appreciation our students acclaim nationwide.

Activities @2015-16

With our sleeves up, this year we have organized many grand social events. "सेवा परमो धर्म:", with this motto, NSS P.G.D.A.V. presents you with our annual fest, "Sevaarth", which is based on the theme “VISAGE OF INDIA”.

The most successful event we had this year was "Blood donation camp", in collaboration with "Red cross society" and "Lions club", in which even students from other colleges actively participated and appreciated the same. We organized so many awareness rallies, clothes and medicine collection drives, campus cleanliness drives, seminars on moral values and movie screening on social values. "Ravi Kalra", the founder of "The Earth Saviours Foundation", personally addressed us on our orientation programme and guided us in this rollercoaster journey.

NSS Report 2014-15

National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of our college has remained very active this year by organizing series of events in the form of lectures, talks, workshops, collection drives, cleanliness drives, annual festival, etc. in order to fulfill its primary objective of personality development through community service.

Informally NSS volunteers started working during admissions by helping students during admission process but  the team of office bearers constituted in early August, 2014. More than 300 students were registered and became part of NSS Unit.  Formally its operations began with orientation programme on 1stSept, 2014, for which Mr. Omkar Nath Sharma popularly known as of MEDICINE BABA was the chief guest. The NSS team was extremely motivated by his effort of collecting unexpired medicines and distributing to poor and needy people and thus started medicine collection drive in the college. On 24th September, 2014, NSS volunteers organized HYGIEIA-Cleanliness Drive in the college to celebrate NSS day. NSS volunteers also participated in large number in ‘Swwach Bharat Abhiyan’organized at Delhi University, North Campus where, they were highly appreciated by vice chancellor for their participation. The college NSS team celebrated Sardar Vallabhhai Patel Jayanti by screening a short movie on his life and career and how he became the deputy prime minister of India in the 90’s. Teachers and students were present in large number during the movie screening.

“Women empowerment”, remained the focus of this year’s NSS events.  On 18th Oct, 2014, NSS organized “A talk on women safety- issues and challenges in the contemporary times” by Kavita Krishnan (Secretary of AIPWA) which highlighted the problems women face in society and gave new perspective to look at the issue. PGDAV NSS team initiated “sahas” a programme  with primary objective of encouraging women in society, which remained very successful.  Further NSS PGDAV college organized its annual festival for the first time,  ‘SEVAARTH’  where various events like PWD talent hunt, best out of waste, T-shirt painting, extempore, treasure hunt etc. were organized based on the primary theme of women empowerment and other social issues. This event was inaugrated by renowned women activist Ms.Ranu Bhogal who shared her views on the topic and conducted an interactive session with students where students also got opportunity to express their opinion about the issue. One of the main highlight of the NSS festival was the self - defence workshop for women conducted by Delhi Police at the college campus. This inter college event turned out to be great success with more than 100 registrations for various events across different colleges of Delhi University.

The NSS volunteers and the core team showed tremendous enthusiasm throughout the year in organizing events in college as well as working with NGOs outside college. They participated in Blood Donation rally to celebrate the ‘NVBDR’ at Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium to realize “LITTLE RED DOT POWER”. They also worked on project “Eklavya” with NGO named Indus Action and spread awareness about Right to Education Act and the rights related to admission in private schools.  NSS volunteers participated in "Walk for life" can support drive to support cancer patients who are in trouble. Further NSS volunteers continuously provide helping hand to blind students in writing their assignments, audio recordings through their “helping the unaided” initiative.

Behind a successful team there is always a highly motivated leader. Right from the beginning NSS Programme Officers Dr. Pinki Punia and Dr. Perveen showed great passion in organizing events and gave shape to the ideas. As a result of inspiring leader, enthusiastic students and very supportive Principal Dr. M. M. Goyal, today PGDAV NSS team has reached a new level and redefined its identity.
